When Faith Feels Quiet Instead of Dramatic

Faith, often portrayed in dramatic moments, is not always dramatic. Faith can be sincere even when it’s quiet. If it’s a quiet season in your life right now, this message may be for you. Faith is the decision to keep turning toward what is true and good, and to be hopeful, even when nothing seems to be happening. A seed does not look active while it is planted in the earth, but it is active! Faith is like that too; faith may be taking root in a person’s heart even though that season appears uneventful. Sometimes the most powerful growth occurs beneath the surface.

When dramatic feelings are not present, faith often becomes more about how we live. Faith may look like forgiveness even when there’s not an apology, or it may be part of someone’s support system when they are struggling. Faith may be showing up for someone when they didn’t show up for you. Faith may be the decision to keep turning toward goodness, or to have faith during a lifelong struggle.

Quiet faith isn't about pretending everything is alright. We all have difficult times in life, but quiet faith is formed in relationships too.

We can say, “I don’t understand this,” or “but I am still here, and I’m still believing.” One person’s faith can look different from another’s. It should never be measured by drama. God is often quiet, but He is there. Dramatic faith and quiet faith require different kinds of courage. Faith asks us to keep believing when there are no promises or guarantees. Sometimes the most faithful words aren't dramatic; they're quiet and say, “I am here.”

Shalom, shalom.
